On October 24, 1945 leaders from 51 countries met in San-Francisco and organized the United Nations. Today, 191 countries, that is almost every country in the world is a member of the UN. Each country has signed an agreement that says that it will help the UN in its actions for international peace and human rights to all people. The main United Nations organization in New York City has a "family" of other organizations. The organizations try to pro vide a better life for everyone. The organizations are UNICEF, UNDP and World Health Organization.

Micro-Credit Support for Women in Semipalatinsk Region Objectives:

  • Empower women of the region by providing access to micro and small loans to women entrepreneurs who do not have access to traditional sources of financing

  • Provide women entrepreneurs with business related training and sup­port

Background: Since 1949, Semipalatinsk region served as the site for conducting nearly 500 nuclear tests. The tests have severely affected the region, including destruction of ecosystems and traditional ways of life.

Micro-Credit Scheme for the women of Semipalatinsk has been suc­cessfully implemented within the UNDP.



Target Beneficiaries: Semipalatinsk City Akimat, Group of Micro-Credit Officers, low income groups of women seeking self-employment in micro-entrepreneurship and the local community as a whole.

The main share in the export of Kazakhstan to the USA belong to fer­rous and non-ferrous metals, fuel, chemical products.

Though the share of the USA in the foreign trade of Kazakhstan is not I very large, the USA is the largest investor to the economy of Kazakhstan. In the year of 2001 American investments to Kazakhstan amounted to USD 1,4 billion. The main part of the American capital is concentrated in the mineral resource industry, in particular, in the oil and gas sector and is repre­sented by such Kazakhstan-American Joint Ventures as the Tengi Chevroil.

A British magazine interviewed 60 young people in their last year at school, and asked them questions about their future (38 girls and 22 boys answered their questions).

The interviewers wanted to know who were the young people's heroes. The most popular characters for many of the boys and girls were Pope John Paul II, and Torvill and Dean, the World Champion ice-skaters. Some of the wanted to be like the footballer Kenny Dalglish, and the girls admired the pop singer Toyah Wilcox.

The favourite jobs for the boys were engineering, playing football, and owning their own shop. A TWELVE -YEAR-OLD SERVANT

I left school when I was twelve and I had to get into service. I went to a young couple who were farmers, and I had to live in. It was about fifteen miles from home and it seemed to me the back of beyond. It was a big rambling place, and I was the only help they had. I got one and three pence a week. They weren't bad to me, but they used to go out a lot and I'd be in the place on my own. I'd go and look in all the cupboards, under beds, I was in. literally terrified. I helped the mistress make butter, and sometimes I used to milk the cows as well. Anyway, I didn't last long. I got so lonely. I went to a butcher wife near Welling borough. She was a terror. There was another maid there, and fortunately we got on well together. We could laugh and cover up for each other if we did anything wrong. We slept in an attic, and we had to be up at six o'clock in the morning. If we were a minute or two late, she’d be there and want to know why. I reckon she laid awake all night long, in the pleasure of catching us out in the morning.

I had fifteen places in twelve years, and only at one of them was I treated like a human being. They didn't think of us as people like themselves. We were different. Occasionally my father and brother used to come and see in. and I felt really unhappy when they left.

LOST CHILDHOOD, LOST FUTURE



A 14-year-old boy grimaces as he struggles to haul a giant fishing net hom the angry waves that crash below him. For nine months, Bounali Kliuumora (Boo-nah-lee See-mamoor-ah) has toiled seven days a week, 10 hours a day, on a rickety fishing pier stranded in the middle of the ocean, 10 mill's off the coast of Indonesia. As he sorts his catch, Bounali is careful to livoid the painful sting of jellyfish and sea snakes tangled in the net.

"1 work from 8 in the morning until 6 at night", says Bounali, wiping sweat nil his forehead as the sun beats down on him. "Every morning, I wake up, Koil I he fish, dry them, %>oil them, and put them into storage. Then, I wait for 11u- tide to go down and do it again".

Bounali is one of 120 million children worldwide, between the ages of 5 .iml 14, who are working instead of attending school.

Who can you see in the pictures? Are they adults or children? Say, where they are and which jobs they are doing.

Do the pictures show us the life at present or in the past? Why aren’t these young children at school? So what is our today’s topic?

XIV. УА: Let’s sum up. You have learned from our lesson that Great Britain in the 19th century was as its most powerful and self-confident. After the industrial revolution it was the “ workshop” of the world. But by the end of the century it had become clear that Britain was no longer as powerful as it had been. Britain lost the advantages it had over other countries. And you have already mentioned the reasons. In 1885 a book entitled “England “ noted “ we have come to occupy a position in which we are no longer progressing, but falling back…”



УИ: В начале 20 века умерла королева Виктория и с ней ушла в прошлое великая эпоха могущества Великобритании. Итоги развития Англии 19 века впечатляют: территориально самая большая страна мира (за счет колоний), имеет огромный авторитет на международной арене, сильный флот, реализует массу конкурентноспособных товаров по всему миру, а главное – дает пример мудрой политики правительства по решению социальных и политических задач. Период расцвета закончился, страну потеснила набирающая силу Германия, о которой разговор у нас еще впереди.
